Can keeping a journal help you to know yourself?

Psychologists say that what we learn from our family, friends and the community contributes to the forming of our personality. Beliefs and impressions formed when we were children sometimes stay with us into adulthood. However, these beliefs may have the tendency to keep us in a stuck state, unable to develop, move forward in our lives and go for the goals and dreams we want.

Something I have enjoyed doing for a number of years is keeping a journal. At the end of the day, depending on how tired I am, I like to write down my thoughts and feelings about what happened during the day. Then I can read back and try to make sense of it and learn from it.

To understand ourselves we need to tap into what we are thinking and feeling

What I have also started doing recently is looking back in my journal to this day, last year, and read what I was doing, how I was feeling. Reading back helps me to realise that I am not where I was last year. I’m a different person and have moved forward. I can recognise my development and see my growth.

For some journal writing might appear boring or you may think you don’t have the time. If you can’t write everyday, can you write once a week, or once a month? You may prefer to record on your phone while doing other activities. Recently. while caught in a huge traffic jam I recorded a topic for a blog through the car blue tooth connected to my phone.

In order to understand ourselves better we need to tap into what we are thinking, what we are feeling. That way you can come to know yourself better, move forward in your life and focus on the things you really want to achieve.
