What does it mean to carry on when all appears lost?

As I watched the Lionesses win the European cup in 2022, I felt incredibly inspired. I wondered how did they keep that determination to win? Where did it come from? I observed the impact their coach, Sarina Wiegman, had on the way they performed. When they huddled together, they wanted to make her proud and the country too. It seemed that they had no doubt in their minds that they would win.

The Thrill of the Game

Although the Lionesses missed out on winning the World Cup this year, as runners up they can be every bit proud of all their accomplishments. As one who had previously found football a boring game, I never would have imagined how I became carried away with the excitement of the game. As a child my father tried to encourage me to watch football on TV with him. Men kicking a ball backwards and forwards across a field somehow seemed boring to me. But had I not witnessed the Lionesses perform on the pitch, I would never have caught the thrill of the game.

When goals seem a long way off

Encouraging and motivating others to achieve worthwhile goals, to believe in their own abilities and the beauty of their dreams, is what I try to instil in my coaching clients. But the difficulty arises when the goals we seek seem a long way off or appear difficult to achieve. While we start with optimism and self belief, somehow along the way we become discouraged, lose faith in ourselves, and feel like giving up.

The loss of a dream, a future attainment can lead to loss of motivation and ultimately confidence. So where do you start to find a way to ‘get back up’ and continue on the path you started? Someone once said:

“Believe in your dreams, they were given to you for a reason”!

Finding the reason can be both hard work, yet thrilling and involves:

  • Digging deep within your soul to find out what you really want
  • What ignites your passion to take action
  • Finding courage to go for what feels right at your core

So be bold, be brave and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish!!
