Is there a connection between the brain and gut?

If someone told you that you have two brains, what would be your reaction? Your brain is the place where you reason, learn, come to an understanding and make a decision. However, in your gut (stomach area) you might feel a sensation, an assured feeling or in contrast a feeling of uncertainty.

Science has shown how the gut can:

“assist with higher cognitive functions like intuitive decision-making” (Brainfacts.org)

When having to make a decision or proceed with a solution or idea, your stomach (gut) may create a feeling encouraging you to question your decision or choice. Have you ever felt this way?

How we respond to decision making

This questioning may encourage you to hold back on your thoughts before acting on a decision. However, your brain may want to go ahead with your decision, reasoning in your mind why the decision is a good one, and if you don’t take it you could lose out. So who wins in the end, the brain or the gut? This may often depend on how each individual responds to decision making.

The brain is great for helping us to understand a situation, laying it out in detail, helping us to see the ‘pros and cons’. However, when you find yourself having to decide and often it may feel like a final or important decision, which part of your anatomy would you trust? Your brain or gut?

Which would you trust, your brain or gut

Making a choice

Morgan Freeman said “never discredit your gut instinct. You are not paranoid. Your body can pick up on vibrations. If something deep inside of you says something is not right about a person or situation, trust it”!

  • Whether its starting a new job [https://confidentyou-today.com/2022/12/08/what-to-do-when-when-you-need-a-boost-of-confidence/]
  • or a new relationship
  • or even buying a new car,

trust your instincts while also reasoning in your mind. Then allow your gut to confirm your final decision. It’s a great partnership! Being able to make decisions that lead to successful outcomes enable you to increase your confidence and self-worth.
