How can accepting your uniqueness increase self worth?

I was always taught to treat others with respect and kindness. While I appreciate the teachings of my family which have supported me throughout my life, I would have liked to hear more about treating myself with kindness and respect. As we have to live with ourselves everyday, its important that we like who we are!

We are the only one who knows our thoughts, carries our ambitions, experiences sadness when we think we fail, and rejoices when we succeed. But how many of us really know and understand ourselves.

How others perceive the way we look

As a teenager, I felt so much emphasis from friends was being placed on how I was supposed look, how I am perceived by others, that it often felt as if I had to put on some kind of performance to impress and be accepted by society. When this happens, our individuality becomes swallowed up not knowing who we are, or what we are here to accomplish.

So why is individuality important? It defines us, our character, qualities that distinguish us from others. Abraham Maslow, psychologist, taught that Self Actualisation was the ability to identify your potential of who you can become. But this sometimes becomes hard work, as we often find people around us dictating who they think we should become. Limiting our chances for self actualisation.

Life dilemmas

Questioning our self worth

Some real life examples that might question our resolve to self actualisation could be a marriage that’s not really working. Questions to consider might be, “do I stay in this marriage, or do I divorce in order to live my life with self integrity?” Or another dilemma, becoming so behind in your University studies and desperately trying to catch up, “do I quit or work harder, develop self belief and carry on”. There are so many similar dilemmas in life that make us question our self worth and acceptance of who we are.

We are all unique individuals, with different experiences and challenges in life. Becoming true to yourself, knowing your strengths and weaknesses can grow self acceptance and self worth, helping you to identify and appreciate all that you are, and that’s exciting!
